James River Transportation Wins NHTSA Public Service Award for Partnership with Driven to Protect

In April, James River Transportation, a leading transportation company based in Richmond, received the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Public Service Award for its outstanding contributions to promoting safe driving practices through its partnership with Driven to Protect | Virginia.

In 2018, the organization partnered with the Driven to Protect | Virginia initiative to conduct the first in-vehicle, on-road test trials of the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) technology. James River equipped its airport shuttles with prototype sensors to collect breath samples as drivers took clients from Richmond International Airport and Norfolk International Airport to their destinations.

This award recognizes individuals and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional achievements for their exemplary work in promoting and maintaining high standards of traffic safety. Through the partnership with DADSS, the fleets logged hundreds of thousands of miles and thousands of breath samples, providing engineers with valuable data to improve the sensors for consumer use.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious award from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,” said Stephen Story, owner and CEO of James River Transportation. “We take our responsibility to provide safe transportation services very seriously, and this recognition is a testament to our commitment to excellence in everything we do.”

James River Transportation continues to be a national transportation leader in the fight against drunk driving, and the ongoing partnership with Driven to Protect has only furthered that reputation. The improvements to the sensors made possible through the partnership will undoubtedly help to save countless lives on the roads.
