DADSS Partner Schneider Wins Prestigious Safety Award

On Oct. 24, 2023, the National Safety Council (NSC) presented transportation company Schneider with the prestigious Green Cross for Safety ®  award for its partnership with the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) Program.

Schneider was chosen out of several finalists for the Safety Advocate Award category, which was announced at NSC’s 24th annual Green Cross Celebration.

In 2021, Schneider became the first truckload carrier to conduct a trial deployment of DADSS’ life-saving alcohol detection technology. This deployment is helping refine the technology by increasing the stress that the system is put under on the road, exponentially increasing the number of miles driven, and exposing the system to new drivers and a wider range of environmental conditions – all key to the DADSS Program’s mission to commercialize fully passive vehicle-integrated breath technology for vehicles of the future.

Through Nov. 2, 2023, Schneider trucks have driven more than 323,737 miles and produced a total of 149.818 samples in 58,928 total sensor operation hours.

“NSC is proud to recognize these organizations for advocating, excelling and innovating to keep workers safe,” said Lorraine Martin, NSC president and CEO. “The commitment to safety amongst this year’s group is unparalleled, and it is a great honor to celebrate their efforts and accomplishments with them. Thank you and congratulations to this year’s Green Cross for Safety award finalists and winners.”

An industry leader and innovator in truck safety technology, Schneider implemented speed limiters in the 1980s and has continued to be an early adopter of other safety technology such as stability control systems, electronic logging devices, collision mitigation systems and forward- and side-mounted video cameras.

The collaboration was originally established through the Driven to Protect Initiative with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
